Third Sunday of Easter
April 19, 2015
Like the Emmaus story that precedes it, today’s Gospel reminds us of the apostle’s experience with the risen Jesus in the community’s Eucharistic celebration. First Jesus gathers the followers as he appears in their midst, then he opens their minds to the understanding of the scriptures. Jesus then shows the disciples his wounds and eats the food they offer. We can see how he demonstrates for them and us our own Liturgy of the Eucharist.
As Jesus opened the minds and hearts of
the disciples he wanted them and us to grasp two things: The written Word of God in the scriptures and
our own repentance and conversion of life that will enable us to forgive and
welcome others as Christ forgives.
“The
author of life was put to death but raised from the dead for the salvation of
all mankind,” -Deacon Jim
This is the story of our Mass: We gather as a faith family, we hear the Word of God proclaimed in the Liturgy of the Word, and then we share in the breaking of the bread as we experience the Eucharist.
